Singing is a craft. As with crafts, its a lifelong journey. One which is up to the voyager to decide the level of perfection desired, as it varies from person to person.
The percentage of real tone-deafness appears to be low, something in the region of 5% to 12%. My coaching experience has shown that most, 9.5 out of 10 cases of students who checked in with ‘tone deafness’, actually learned to listen better, and pitch more accurately once they have a better grasp of their voice and learn to connect with their inner musical ear. Though it varies from individuals – some adjust quickly, some may need more time.
Every individual is different and born with varying sets of attention, vocal facility, confidence, and flair. There are gifted students who start at 4 years old. Though the 6 to 7 year old range is a more common age to kickstart singing sessions.
Most sessions start off with vocal technique grounding as a springboard for application to songs. The more elementary a singer, the more technique grounding there usually is. But then again, this mix varies, it depends on the character and learning tendencies of the student.
Face-to-Face, and Online. A practice and application based approach is usually taken.
Online coaching and face-to-face sessions each possess their own merits. There are students who prefer online learning to physical learning, given that today there are more online tools available since the pandemic narrowed the learning gap between the two.
Yes they are
There is no one specific method prescribed, but more an observation with what works with the individual. Having coached various genres, languages, singing objectives, it appears that certain methods fit certain individuals better. Therefore we do not generalize as each training method also has its merits and demerits. Authenticity and flow is key.
